Question about dual switch...

Ok Keith, Rogerio, Les gief some help to the guy here will ya?

I just burned a dual Kickstart tonight (1.3 & 3.1) on an 27C800 for my beloved A600.
I used a 3-way switch connecting Pin1 to middle switch pin and the other 2 pins of switch to GND and to +5V accordingly.
I tested it and works like a charm (both in 1.3 and 3.1 environment), so here are my 2 questions:

- AFAIK I need to tie an 4k7 resistor somewhere for safety (don't recall if it needs to be tied to +5 or to Pin1. Also what is the importance of this resistor?
- Ok here's the most important part (pl0x don't call me a nubby ok? )

Can I use a dual 3-way switch (6pins) to simultaneously switch the kickstarts as I do now, but on the same time open or close the enable/disable pin header of ACA630?
What I want really is being able to disable ACA when I switch to 1.3 kickstart (for old games loaded via HxC SD Emulator). Switching to the other side, ACA is on along with kickstart 3.1

Any ASCII or handwritten diagram would help a lot

Answer was a lot easier than I imagined LOL. I'm not so dumb after all! :nuts:

Better put the resistor on pin #1 of ROM and the other lead to ground.

But that's only meaningful for kick switches that have more than one ROM in it.

That's what I told in my post mate...
I made a custom ROM that holds 2xKickstarts in it :smile:

Edit: Unless you mean kickstart switches that hold more than one physical Eprom.

Please install the 4k7 resistor between the +5V source & the switch contact, the Eprom leg & Gnd can be connected directly to the other switch contacts.

This is the correct way to do it & will protect your miggy should the switch fail or any internal shorts occour.

That was the point indeed! Full compatibility with old games and demos run from HxC

Checked Hybris last night (that had sprite corruption with ACA enabled and Kick 1.3) and not only it works like a charm, but also the sound of the drive when loading + music felt so good even in HxC!

I already have this switch on my A600 and I've been meaning to do this mod for ages! (Even back on the Apollo 620) Just one of those jobs I never got round to.

Now I might have to put my new soldering iron to good use

Sorry to hijack your thread mfilos!

I'm going to attempt this hack on my A600, I'm not sure from the diagram which way round I need to wire to my switch to get 1.3 rom and ACA disabled at the same time. I've taken a few pics of my switch, in this position now it is 3.1 rom.

Hmmm wait a sec my friend.
I don't know how your Kickstart ROM is, but as I see it it's kinda different from mine.
Mine is an 27C800 (1MB Eprom) with written on it:
256+256 (1.3) + 512 (3.1). For selecting the upper bank you just tie the Pin 1 into +5V or for the lower bank you tie the Pin 1 into Ground.

From what I see your Kickstarts don't need +5V right?
It doesn't change a thing though. You just need the other 2 out of 3 pins of switch mounted into your ACA's enable/disable header.

I don't know how the switch is done for kickstarts (I can only tell if you made a continuity test with a multimeter) but it doesn't matter so much...

Here's what you'll do:
You need the middle and the upper or lower pin to give to the ACA header.
Just pick one (for example upper and middle) and tie them to ACA's header.
- If 3.1 (as it's on that position) works just fine with Accelerator enabled + RAM then you picked the correct spot and you stick with it.
- If 3.1 (as it's on that position) just boots with just the Chip and no Accelerator then it's wrong and you only need to change the upper connection in switch with the lower

That's all

I tested it and it works with the top configuration so you can all now have a laugh at my first ever time soldering

You can see that the first go was not so good, although it seems to be held on tight the join on the left is very untidy, I think I may desolder and re-try! My second go the join on the right went a lot better

I'm not a pro solderer myself as well, but I can manage most things these days with my gear. Elegant soldering is only achieved through time and many many tries!
