Re: a1200 in an a600 case

ok been doing a bit more iv put an dvd r/w in it but im waiting to get an male 44pin cf adapter so iv put an 2.5"hdd in for now.
its a but like an holiday suitcase to close it but it closes and works.

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

ok ran it for a long time running darksead cd32 it was 21.8/9 ?c outside ran for over 45 mins and it was a nice warm 35.2/3?c inside with cd rom working and 2.5" hdd running.

so not to bad

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

Very nice work. Impressed. Now that is a true A600 (half the size of an A1200 ;))

Only way I can think you would ever be able to connect anything to the CPU expansion port is if you can make a port extender for it. Like the PCI risers you can get for ITX motherboards. Then you could maybe connect the accelerator card the other way over the top of the A1200 mobo. Except there is also the internal room issue of cause.

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

new case came today a lot more white than the fisrts on so the chopping began its all in the new case now no holes in the side of this one

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

Clearly Awesome!!!!

as Merlicious said on the fone a while back now.... "there is a disturbance in the force.... the force is strong with this one"

you have pulled off a marvel here James, I doubt anyone has the balls to do what you have done let alone achieved a working A1200 in A600 Chassis, even I had my reservations i admit!

But i am both humbled and marveled by your work!!

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

thanks zetr0.
Just having some problems with cd32 emu i dont know to much about software im using idefix 97 on an unBuffered ide in there or is it the 3.0 roms

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

After all of your hard work will you be creating a proper tutorial on how it was done?

A schematic showing where to cut the motherboard and where to join up the connections to get the joysticks ports working again would be very useful, and I bet that would inspire others to give it a go.

If I am ever lucky enough to find a spare working A1200 at a car boot for 99p then I would easily consider giving it a go. However I wouldn't chop up my existing A1200 for anything.

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

yes i can do but all the boards are diffrent most of its the same its just the port0, fire0 is in diffrent places and i still trying to sort out the caps light the caps works but the light dont come on

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

@James

I haven't forgotten you my friend, I have plans to build you a cabled Accelerator Extender, similar to the PCI extenders but with a A1200 female connector at one end and male connector at the other.

the length will be just under 10CM.

lets see if i can draw a pic quickly... (DONE)

now I can have the MALE connector fabricated by www.futurlec.com, I have done business with them before and there end product is fantastic. the FEMALE connector i can salvage from a dead card that i have here :)

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

now that look good whats the cost of the male end?? 102 pin is that? thats a lot of soldering but worth it in the end

thanks mate

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

ahhhh my mistake, (been reviewing the CD32 expansion bus recently)

The actual connector is 150 pins I shall adjust the pic :)

the Male connector will be around £20 to make i think from futurlec, including setup costs. it all comes down to getting time to build it in eagle PCB software and test it :D then comes the fun in building it :D

I will probably use two sets of High Density 80 pin SCSI Cables and connectors from each part, these give a great contact without to much resistence and or added latence in the cable.

please note that this is ALL theoretical and we wont know if it will work, until we have built it :)

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

heres the female 80 pin scsi connectors I was thinking of using on each component

Also review the attached re-worked file it should give you a rough idea :)

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

Cool plans. Is there going to be enough room left in the case to locate an accelerator though? Even with this connection extender?

Will you be building it so the extended connector is pointing in the other direction? So any attached card is pointing into the case with the edge connector towards the right hand side of the case?

I can't wait to find out if this will work. Will be so great if it does. And if so it will surely end up being one of the best Amiga builds to date.

What else could you add to this project? How about some clock port expansions? ;) Catweasel, scan doubler, usb ports, internal network adapter?

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

@zetr0
hi there nice plans but it wont fit under the floppy if we could put the scsi plug in line with the board so the cable plugs dont stick up it may go in. and we need the cable longer than 10cm. if im down your way i will have to pop in with it so you can see the inside and get a feal for how much room i have.
it be better to solder on each pin of the end coneter for lower profile

james

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

Wouldn't there be issues with data transfer if the cable was longer though? How about relocating the floppy drive to make room? Have it on the right? ;) Or replace the floppy with a Catweasel and a low profile high density laptop floppy drive. YOu wouldn't be able to boot from that though AFAIK.

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

Signal Loss and Signal Doplar

Signal Degradation
As we all know a signal is lost over its length, this Signal Loss over length can be negated by using either shorter length or signal amplification, the things one can do with an opamp :D, although this can (and often does) introduce further noise to the system.

Signal Doplar (cross and shadow/echo signals)
This can happen in a variety of ways, but the most common is one line picking up another line signal. the problem is by introducing long signal lengths you also increase instability of the signal. this is through the noise generated by other lines carrying thier own signal(s)

A practical way of this is to run both Large Ground Planes and interleave ground wires to further reduce noise (kinda how an ATA 100 cable works)

I always remember reading that quantum physics book in the local library how so many metals are impractical to use at very low temperatures (like -10c) as they become essentially a super conductor, this can decrease the signal travel time so significantly not only can your latching times be way off to collect the signal, but it can be reflected back up the signal line causing all sorts of nightmare.... imagine it like ripples in a pond reflecting and refracting off each other....

Anyway.... around 10CM with 30AWG or higher, (may need interleaved grounding wires) should be okay, but its an experimentation at best :D

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

Just a thought....

I know it would be cool to have everything inside the case and all, but how about taking the floppy drive out of the A600 and using an external floppy if a boot floppy is required? The external can be configured as df0 in the setup screen so it will still all work. This will create the necessary room for the accelerator, I got the idea from a laptop the missus has which needs a USB floppy drive.

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

I was thinking of making one of those fast-slot extenders. Thought about purchasing a Z4/Mediator connector on Amigakit and desolder it and put cables between.

Those connectors are a bit expensive though. Anyway on amiga.org some people said 10 cm is no problem. I was going to run a BPPC and CVPPC on mine though so maybe such hardware has higher demands?

Hmm.. what if one could insert A1200 mobo, DCE-SCFF, BPPC, BVPPC, CF-card, Mini-ITX PSU into an A600 shell? :P :P :P

Re: a1200 in an a600 case

@jimbob005 WOW just found this project this is amazing - Had any luck fitting an accelerator?
