Now don't do it again!

That was the weakest point on the pcb track... now its the strongest...

Short it out again, and something else is going to smoke :p

Thanks again! It's the first time I've managed to short out an Amiga and if you check out some of my past threads you will see I've owned a few over the years ;)

It's a lesson well learned now so I doubt it'll ever happen again!

Re-built and all working as it should, thanks again for the help!

I think this is the first time I've actually repaired something myself :D

There's another burnt track on the trapdoor slot...

edit: it appears to be pin 149 on the trapdoor slot, which is also +12volt. It may still be connected, but only just, its possible both tracks were heating up, till the one finally blew (the one you've already repaired)

Well spotted, I never saw that :o

I guess I should repair that one too, or leave it if everything is working?

I'd probably "fix" that one too.

It suggests that something on the trapdoor card is what was shorted out... or the edge connector itself was.

Looking at your pics, I don't see how anything would be close enough to the trapdoor/card to short it out though.

As mentioned in my above edit, its pin 149, which is once again, the +12volt rail...

I'm really glad the Blizzy wasn't damaged, I'd be devastated if that was killed from a silly mistake.

I'll have to strip it down tomorrow and double check everything again, I guess this is the danger of trying to cram a lot of stuff in a Desktop Wedge Amiga.

Little update today :)

I bought a Mechware SCSI Card reader to replace my Floppy drive and Roy Bates kindly made up a custom SCSI cable for me:

Installed into the original position of the Floppy Drive, to access the slots will need modification of the A1200 lid of course, this will be considered at length before any cuts are made, as my Father in Law says, measure twice, cut once!

P1050969.JPG

First tests successful using 4gb CF PFS3 formatted in the CF card slot, it takes a long time to start booting +30 seconds I was starting to think it wasn't going to work as after a short flash of the LED's there was no activity for that time...

P1050970.JPG

Just a simple install of BetterWB, it's rapid as you can imagine lol with the 030 and SCSI power!

Drive Speed a little slower than I was hoping, circa 2.5mb/sec so about the same as my IDEFix Express however I'm mindful that there will be a lot less CPU overhead from the SCSI

Still need to test the other slots, this was using 133x CF so I don't think the speed is limited by Media as I've had these running at 6mb/sec via SCSI-IDE bridges.

I imagine boot delay is due to searching all the LUN's?

Hi Steve, try popping the CF card into the PCMCIA slot with an adapter and see if that boots faster!

Cool project btw :)

Thanks!

Indeed it does boot a little faster from PCMCIA and I should be able to use that without even modifying the case!

Some delay will also be due to no IDE device having being connected for these tests, once I get my IDE devices back on there it should be much faster

im wondering if thats a normal speed for that reader,if it can be optimized a bit?

I read similar results actually from others so I think this speed is about right.

Does the Blizzard have any SCSI tools? Like the PPC's early boot menu?

I need to look into that too!

Now to see if I can get everything back together

More info here on the SCSI reader here:

---------- Post added at 12:59 ---------- Previous post was at 11:49 ----------

Hooked everything back up, once IDE is populated the booting is instant, no waiting at all so must have just been 3.1 rom IDE delay!

Everything works together in perfect harmony, how often can you say that for Amiga

The SCSI reader is certainly going to be a faster way of transferring files than PCMCIA-IDE, I've kept a nice little BetterWB install on a small bootable partition for when I want to test stuff without heavy CWB OS3.9

Now to fill my external CF with some MODs & stuff

Oh and I must setup Blizkick so I can get the OS3.9 BB2 updates without the stupid reboot, I'm missing ACATune!

Hello mate, nice system I'm impressed:thumbsup:

Just out of curiosity, does your card reader allow booting from a memory card?

Sorry didn't ready carefully. I can see it does :)

Thanks ghoul, indeed all slots are bootable although I'm not sure which takes priority in event of multiple bootable cards!

The IDE takes priority over the SCSI however, but it's just a simple case of holding both mouse buttons and selecting the drive I want to boot from and of course I can always raise the priority of one of the SCSI partitions if I want to boot from that automatically .

One thing I did notice was I put the HDF's I use with ShapeShifter onto my CF card on the SCSI reader and performance was noticeably better whilst running the Mac emulation.

I so wish I didn't sell my Blizzard 1260/75 :(

ps. Got my Rom with BB2 updates re-kicking via BlizKick now too!

things have moved on since this thread started! anybody offering this as a service or a kit ?

would love it!

Do you mean for the whole setup or just the cable?

For me the most fun comes from the build and creating something special, having someone else do everything for you would take away from the experience IMHO.

I even feel bad I didn't do the cut and make the cable myself but I know where to draw the line between my skills and idea's!

I have just done another A1200 slot and am just putting the drive in position and have come up with a nice idea for clamping it using a swish rail clamp lol,but the beauty is if it needs to come out in the future it can!
This one will probably go on here, might sell and swap for the upper case of another A1200:thumbsup:
