With 1meg chip ram, and 1.5meg fast ram in my Mega Midget Racer accelerated 36Mhz A500, with an overclocked A590 scsi controller, games would flash to a black screen while loading because of insufficient ram....

an "accelerator" with a 68000 and 2 megs is completely and utterly pointless.

its not an accelerator! :p

Exactly, Jens thinks he's helpin the Amiga community but he's really just polishing a turd! Sure you can add an aca12xx to it but it should be a decent product in its own right and right now it's pretty lame!

Guys, all you're doing here is going over the same ground that you were in the EAB thread which is pointless.

If you don't like the specs of the ACA500 don't buy it, we all know 2mb isn't enough for proper operation of WHDLoad so it doesn't need 100's of post to cement the fact :picard

I agree more Ram would have been ideal, but the fact is Jens needs to make some money from his projects, you can't expect him to work for free, of course he wants you to buy another ACA card to expand it.

If the ACA500 doesn't work for you as a product, vote with your wallet instead of the constant criticism which will only drive people away from developing anything for our classic systems.

I embrace any and all upgrades for our classic miggy's, we've asked for more Ram which isn't in Jen's plans so get over it and wait for the Zeus or some other solution ;)

What I want to read in these threads is genuine update on the status and features not an ongoing rant like a broken record :coffee:

Hi Steve I respect what you are saying but it's just disappointing as many of us wanted to buy an aca500, just as we have his aca12xx boards, but Jens seems hell bent on ignoring the requests of most 500 owners. It's actually looking like a great product except for being badly let down by the amount of standard ram and the 2mb extra option for 30€ is just insulting!

Having the aca12xx slot is a great idea but its no excuse for trying to sell us a half assed product that doesn't stand up on its own. :(

Hi Steve, my friend.

This is not to criticize a product (which is still in draft form) or a rant. Rather, it is to give some ideas that the manufacturer can adopt or not.

About working for free, it is obvious that Jen's is a very appreciated person in the Amiga World for their tremendous contributions (I have purchased many Jen's products ), but we must not forget that he is a company.

@Thread

Please avoid to compare prices or post inappropriate comments about Jens. He has the right to produce and sell as he wishes.

I think that's very well said :)

I think Jens last update was they he would hope to have the new proto boards by now (June) so maybe we will see some update soon. But he did say there are other things he is working on that take priority at the moment.

@Merlinkv my friend, there is no point anyone posting any ides's or opinions here for Jens AFAIK he does not read these boards, best place is EAB or A1k.org where he posts as a Member

Looking really promising. A nice plastic case to house it would be the icing on the cake

I'm still staggered that this is being released with out a case, no one wants a bare board hanging out the side of their a500 where it can be easily accidentally damaged!

I'm sure there was a thread on the for sale board a while back for NOS GVP cases. It looks like this might fit inside one of those, or perhaps an external 'Overdrive' HDD case.

Of course, once it's in it would be a bit of a hassle to get back out/reconfigure...

i think kipper2k was looking into a case for these recently.

also, they would probaly be alot more expensive to make if jens had to make cases for them.
i would rather have a cheap way to have a cpu and memory upgrade than a cheap one with expensive case.

If it keeps the target price I understand why Jens hasn't developed a case, it could add a lot to each board.

It will be nice if we see a community designed case for it :)

Overall though I'm still disappointed it's not an internal solution, however I'm going to buy one anyway for experimenting with my ACA turbo boards & A500+ :coffee:

I totally agree mate, it should have been internal from the get go - I barely have room on my desk for 1 Amiga at a time and I certainly don't have room for an extra wide a500 when I want to use it.

Adding a bit extra to the cost is kind of a redundant argument, everyone wants an external case to protect the aca500 + aca12xx so they have to shell out regardless.

I wont be buying an aca500 as its jut a blatant attempt to sell more aca12xx cards - ill prolly get a Vampire500 now I think and a cf-IDE. If the Zeus ever come thru that is also looking quite good.

i'll probaly be making my own case out of aluminium, but then again most peaple wont be able to that i suppose.

the thing is if jens had to run cases for these, say injection molded plastic etc it wouldnt be cheap.
not even if he farmed it out to someone.
sure it would of been nice to have it internal, but i think he went with the cheapest method having it internal has its own problems.

I also think it's very odd, it should really be internal. I think the reason Jens gave was something about it being to hard to install if it was internal. The thing is that nearly all of us remaining classic users are very capable of taking the case off and installing new hardware.

I'm sorry to say that I don't see this product selling as many units as Jens is hoping for (it looks like he expects lots of people to start using their 500's again because of this product). Of course I'd love to be proved wrong on this :D

Considering that to be properly useful the aca500 needs at least an aca1220 attached to it, the least he could do is include a case - it's really looking like $200+ product even without a case!

Yeah it needs a case!!

However. I still think that the best possible accelerator available for the A500 is the Viper520CD which has several very useful features.
