on an interesting side note:

a few demos I have complained of no mmu or fpu or some spurious error on the 68040 but now none do , every demo works.

it seems all Apollo firmware code is not equal after all.

that is intersting:) it would seem so.:)

out of interest both the firmware's on the 040 eproms i had before i converted them where 5.55.

i forgot to ask which cpu are you getting from stachu,is it a revision 6 060?

Not sure of the version I have ordered two from him. An xc and an mc68060

If one of then clocks up to 66 I'll be happy . My quest for one hundred MHz is on hold as I've failed at the first hurdle :-)

One is MC68060RC50 rev6 - can work at 80MHz no problem
Second is XC68060RC50 rev1 - here you will have 50MHz, not more...

you dident fail the 100mhz that cpu you have at the moment wont go that far anyway, even with a rev 6 it's not a dead sert.

i had a revision 5 over ten years ago and only managed 72 mhz thatb was a 60mhz part with mmu and fpu

mmm revision 6,mikes gonna love this cpu.:)

remember mike this cpu needs active cooling at 80mhz or above

You just know its going to power wires and a 100mhz crystal bolted in it ... Poor thing

just be carefull though mike ok,i dont want you to destroy your amiga trying though alright mate.;)

Well let's see if this Apollo plays nice with 68060s it hasn't so far. Odd because it's super stable with 68040s

NEWS FLASH ......happy update time
**************************************

A lovely spanky xc68060 50mhz cpu has arrived for my friends card - to replace his damaged cpu.

and well , it doesn't boot ? :-(

test it in my flaky Apollo and bingo , boots up to work bench as AGA 060 @ 50mhz - no errors no bull yay joy !!!!!!

its been running for about half an hour on demos and its cool and quick. so 66 mhz time.

reboot and bingo - prefect!!

runs lovely bit warmer but not much.

dare i try 75 mhz?

yay it boots but locks up after a bit.. nice try tho.. :-)

so why won't it boot on my friends Apollo?

well the only differences between the cards is - his has 5.55 rom and mine has 5.60.

So i swap boot roms as i have already socketed his rom.

and... bingo it boots perfectly.

and at 66 mhz. with the resistor moved.

so a perfect afternoons work..

All is good in life.

my Apollo lives as a 66mhz but its not my cpu , mines on order from Stan.

so I'm now running my friends Apollo at 66mhz with my boot rom (5.60) and its working perfectly playing 060 demos .

excellent , dare i say a happy ending to this long sad story.

The moral to the story ?

DO NOT BUY 75mhz EC CPU's !!!!!!!

credits.

I wish to thank my friend who casually asked me to look at his Apollo ...
Roy for sending firmware and general support
Stan for his lovely cpus
Zetro for pointing things out about ram speeds.
my agent
my mother

awww :-)
