last questions - does anyone know if there's a good 5" alternative to the jxd 7800 please? I see the JXD S5110b , is that worth considering?

I have the same PSP 1000 (fat model) since 2006.
Emulation will be ok with any psp able to be set to a custom firmware and load homebrews, which includes 1000, 2000 and most 3000 but probably not the PSP street (i'm not up to date on current status of the PSP scene).
1000 is rock solid, but 2000 can be hooked to a TV and 3000 has more RAM (maybe 2000 too, can't remember).

No offence to those with PSP's, they were great in their day and are probably fine for 8 and 16 bit emulation, but I wouldn't recommend buying 10 year old technology. I mean just look at the specs:

Processor, screen resolution, RAM, the JXD blows it out of the water on every level. If you have one knocking around already then sure give it a go, but I wouldn't recommend buying one as an emulation machine in 2015. There are so much better alternatives now (I do agree that a few years back a PSP probably was better than the Dingoo etc which all had terrible controls.)

Do both thumb sticks work with the touch mapper on the 7800B or do you need to use CFW like on the older version I have?

every button can be mapped, both thumb sticks can be mapped and also the right thumbstick can be in 2 modes, (look) or (move) mode,

Cool, that's the same as my CFW. I'll chop mine in for a quad core one if/when it dies...

I use the Jxd s7800 b and it's good. I'm not a fan of android but you do get used to it and the emulation for Psx and dreamcast is on the whole impressive. For older platform emulation Psp go does a fine job. I did look into getting a Wikipad, a bit more pocket friendly than Jxd.

i got one - tre GPD G58. Looks like a sony.. but isnt. I'll try it out in the next days, ignore android and screen aspects and hopefully the emulators will do their job :)

Why the Android bashing? Granted that back in the Android 2.3 days the OS showed promise, but had a long way to go. Was slow, stuttered, had horrible app storage limitations etc.. but since 4.4 Kitkat it has been a brilliant OS and has left iOS long behind. And with Android 5 it is now really nice. Well on my Nexus 4 it is anyway. Great emulation OS.

My android gripe is just having to set the paths for each emu and I have some sd card issues Jxd. When you use Jxd with happy chick or game centre it's very good indeed.

I've had android on several devices over the last years and, especially on phones, not liked it at all. it's not bashing, I'm saying i dont want an android device if they were as bad as they were. After the phones, Then I got a tablet, in my trying-to-like-android phase, in fact i had 2, an archos and a game tablet, but i couldnt get past the learned behavior from iphone of having a home button, an in the case of the game tablet, the lousy screen. I tried, but have not liked it to date.

But what i do like about android is the size of the market an what it brings, lots of emulators, cheap devices. =good. But i still dont like the UI, at all.

This is kitkat, seems a bit different in a few areas. in fact this one has its own theme/skin.

I always had issues with Android myself, with it not quite doing certain things exactly as I hoped, but having used multiple devices over the years it does come down to the hardware and manufacturer. I am not a fan of skinned OS's and prefer to use the vanilla Android releases as seen on Google's own Nexus devices, hence the reason I use a Nexus 4 phone with Android 5, which is the best touchscreen and mobile OS experience I've used to date. This contrasts with some older Android phones where I had to fight the OS at times.

However, regarding skinned OSs, I hated Touchwiz on Galaxy mobiles (my wife has owned them all from the original to the current S5), but I get a Galaxy TabPro 10.1 at Christmas and it really works well on that, so it definitely is the device and hardware the really affects a user's perception and experience of an OS. The TabPro 10.1 is a real bargain at the moment in Currys, at £229 for a 10" tablet with an 8 core CPU, 3GB ram and a 2560x1600 resolution. It works well for emulation and has an SD card slot to store all your roms and emulators on. Only negative is for those whom need real button and joystick controls. You could however do something like link a PS3 controller to the tablet for gaming, and get a case with a built in stand.

If youre going to compare Android to Apple you need to compare like for like. A budget Android device is never going to have the polish that an Apple device has.
I avoid cheap Android devices like the plague, Google should ban them!

if apple allowed emulators, and had a device with buttons, and i could justify the cost for a device just for games, i'd be able to compare like for like and i'd be happy :)

i tried already updating the os on this gpd to a custom firmware without the installed skin on it, but the touchscreen no longer worked so i had had to revert. On balance, it shields me from some of the ugliness ...it'll do fine. the screen has bloody awful viewing angles but then it only cost £60-70!!

I'm very pleased i got a 5" screen btw, for old atari games and mame I think this will be a good compromise. The device looks like a psp or whatever it is. And in a few years...upgrade to a device with a decent ui and a better screen :) haha

So true. Cheap Android devices, regardless of spec, do not run the OS in the same way as a more expensive one. The same goes for laptops and Windows. Buy something cheap and initially you might think it's great value for money, but a few weeks later you will start having issues. Spend more and the experience is a lot better.

Exactly! :D
My Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia before that and my Nexus tablet all worked fantastic. But other people I know had cheaper devices eg a Sumvision 7 inch tablet, absolute crap!

With regards to the skin, its obviously a personal preference I guess :) But as you know Im not a vanilla Google fan! Samsung and LG do some great things with it.

The JXD ha no flaws IMHO. The only thing it lacks is a decent Amstrad CPC/plus emulator.

Everything else from c64 to PSP works perfectly.
