I finally got one file copied to my new/used A1200. It is a total pain and annoying... I have all the hardwares to transfer files, but is not able to do anything because the A1200 does not have even the basic transfer files with modern systems. No ethernet (which I sort of understand), no CD compatibility, only DD floppies. My non-Amiga systems only have USB and ethernet. My Mac Mini with Imation drive can only read/write HD disks. I had to dig up my old Windows98 system just to get a floppy equipped computer that can read and write DD disks. Then there is the DD disk issue. I actually have to tape over the hole just to get a DD disk and have only 740K instead of 1.4K. I never had this kind of problem with my old A4000. Why is Crossdos not installed properly in the first place?? On my A4000 it had always been installed in dev and I never had to move that file. In addition, my A4000 works with the Zip drive, Bernoulli, and Syquest drives. It also have CD access. Why is A1200 so different? With the kind of trouble I have and the limitations of the A1200 relative to the A4000, I can foresee major problems with trying to run this unit as the A4000-lite. Why do people like the A1200 more than the A4000?? I can't wait for my A4000 to come back from repair.

Having both models, I do not agree!
A4000 is much harder and more expensive to expand even for simple file transfer. Its only benefit used to be built in HD floppy disk drive, but with PCs and Macs no longer having floppies, this is no longer an advantage.

A1200's PCMCIA port was one of Commodore's best decision. CF adapters, ethernet cards, and lately even those Sony CD ROM drives are easily added. I modified workbench 3.1 disk to include cf device and its mountlist, so booting from one automatically mounts the CF card.
For older models such as A500 or A2000, I got myself one of the inexpensive parallel port microSD adapters which provides me with an ability to move files to them.

On the other hand, yes the A4000 is easily expanded with the CD-ROM drive, but those are becoming obsolete same as floppies. IDE to CF adapters are an option, but they are not hot swappable. Finally, getting A4000 online requires significantly more expensive ethernet solutions. Based on all this, the A1200 is much better suited for quick and simple file transfers.

Don’t get me started

Here to help but you need to walk and learn the basics before running.

Get a cf/pcmcia adapter with a card and any generic cf usb reader for pc / mac and just drag drop over couldn’t be easier

Want a mission??? Try the same with an acorn archimedes then you’ll feel pain. Ask @Timtheloon 😀

PCMCIA CF card adapter is the way to go. Can't get any easier then that :D

I've set up my A1200 and transferred what I need back in 2009. Since then I didn't need to transfer anything.

I have them (CF cad and PCMCIA writer on A1200). It’s getting the two files to the A1200. I’m on workbench 3.0. Tried adf opus, but it won’t transfer in my win12 system for grease weasel. Then I got the CF PCMCIA, but can’t get floppy to be compatible till crosses is moved. Then there is the DD floppy issue described above. I thought about scsi and ethernet via pcmcia , but those also need the drivers to go into the A1200 to start as well.

Can't recommend You to stay on KS3.0, too much limitations You will deal with. And 3.1 isn't much better. Get something more modern. And please think about Gotek - it'll help You in many ways

Nobody has said it yet ..
I would mention the plipbox ..
Connects to the parallel port and gives you ethernet to any of your Amigas ..
Except the A1000 has a different port I think . But there is a port adaptor.
It will get you ftping around the world .

So annoying that no one wants to use search these days....

Finally, got the second file installed and I can access the CF card at last. I transferred my Mac II rom over and started Fusion…. Then the DD floppy limitation hit me again (at least CF card is accessible so I can actually get drivers etc.. installed. On the A4000, I got HD floppy to install System7 and the Emplant board is highly useful, not to mention the my A4000 have SCSI n the processor board. My only next step is to copy the internal bootable CF card on the A1200 for backup and start to upgrade what I can (PiStorm32 eventually).
