And that brings me to the question of why Apple needs a connector that supports more than USB? USB2 is good enough to stream audio and video, as well as data and power. I bet they won't support USB3 either once it starts migrating down to other mobile devices.

Indeed, apparently USB-to-Lightning cables are all USB2. Then again, it may be possible to upgrade it to USB3 later with a firmware revision.

As for not using USB2, the only thing I can speculate is whether or not it can handle HD streaming. One thing that Lightning is meant to do is do HDMI output.

Actually, that raises a question for me. As someone who's not terribly au-fait with Android, are there equivalent devices and connectors that allow you to plug an Android device into your stereo/HDTV/whatever? I assume there must be...

I have a £5 connector that plugs into the micro USB port on my HTC One X and runs into an HDMI plug on the TV. It can mirror my screen and also stream movies off the phone. Needs to be powered but that can also be from a USB on the TV. A cool but not often used feature for me, but I suppose I could do powerpoints for work that way.

Standard phone Chargers will be a thing of the past in the next couple of years as Induction charging will be more common. (they already do this for tooth brushes!)

Also USB connectivity will be superseded with the next Blutooth

Could be true, but I'm not 100% sure. Bluetooth use has always been focused on connecting devices to a main system, like console controllers, mice, headphones, handsfree kits etc. I have the feeling they want to keep the technology distanced from outgoing data transfer to some degree, although I agree that with Smart TVs currently being the big buzz, the industry is currently focusing more on getting content into the TV from all other sources around the house. Although WiFi is the firm favourite for the moment.

Thats what the mhl standard is. Its a usb port with hdmi at the back. My phone has a seperate mini hdmi jack and micro usb is sepetate. I prefer the two sepetate connectors tbh, but it looks like the future standard will be mhl type connectors (think usb 3, where if you use a usb2 cable, it still fits, just has less pins)

Yeah, same here John, I prefer this TBH. I think you're still going to need 2 cables anyway for MHL, unless Standard USB ports in PC's magically change shape. I like it now with micro USB and miniHDMI seperate, its perfect. I think the only benefit of MHL is you get a combined connector in the Phone, thus saving space and cost for the manufacturer.

Standards are changing so frequently in the mobile industry that you could almost argue that there are no standards.

My tablet, a hp touchpad, uses induction charging. While this is nice I like to have my tablet in a cover. Which doesn't fit the induction stand very well. also, when it is out of power when i want to use it, dragging the induction stand into bed is a bit silly. And not to mention of say my mobile also used induction charging i couldn't fit that alongside the tablet on the charging stand. Not to mention it is slower than regular charging, and is not as power effective.

So while induction charging is the way of the future, they need to come together for a standard (like they have with Qi), and they need to come up with products that takes several units.

Induction charging is still a very new technology, much like NFC. Both technologies are the future, but they are still being developed.

If induction charging takes off as hoped then we will have it fitted under desks and tables around the house, and when out in restaurants, so we can just put the device down and it will start charging. No need for charging jackets or dedicated stands.

Looking at Apple maps one friend of mine (he lives all times in Spain) told me our country is now near the Pacific Ocean :wooha:

New technology? Our family's first electric toothbrush bought in the 80s used induction charging. Or was it the second that we bought in the early nineties? Nevertheless, I'd say induction charging has been around at least twenty years.

Everywhere is in Dudley... Apparently ;) Quite happy with google maps in a browser for now... Apparently its been mentioned that they might just bung google maps back until the apple maps actually exist ;)

Cheers,
