I've got loads of old Memory SIMMs...

Hi all,

I've got *loads* of old memory SIMMS, both 72pin and 30pin. I'm pretty sure most of them still work, as I've had them well stored for years.

I often see people posting on the Wanted Hardware forum (and elsewhere) asking for SIMMs for old kit, but as I have no way of testing what I've got - I've not offered them up.

Does anyone know of an easy way to test these things? I've googled for SIMM testers and they are all really expensive - as I'm not looking to make any money from these (I'd happily send them to people for the price of P+P - to help out the community), I don't really want to be out of pocket at the end of it.

So thoughts... How do I test them?

I only see adequate mobos or working devices that accepte those kind of RAM to test them and a software for checking them. There's no simple way to check RAM - like with a multimeter for exemple. You could build a RAM tester however it's not so easy. Speaking simple, RAM chips can have many other problems than working or not, as many electronic parts. For exemple simple logic gates like the 74 line of ICs, have to be check with a logic analizer. You can buy a simple one for 10€, however the work won't be automatic. Saying that I want to say that to save money you have to spend time and have knowledge or spend more money and save some time. If you don't want to sell them, nobody will be mad at you if he will received defective RAM for free. You will only post that they are not tested.

What I did to test my box of simms is I put my 030 in an open A1200 and tried each simm one after the other and labelled them as I went. It helps if the card you use can take 32mb simms for this method though, and it's a right faff on but at least once you've done it it's done.
