Absolutely gutted... I've owned this A3000 for about a year and have spent a lot of time cleaning it up (recap, retro bright, stripped and cleaned keyboard, painted top etc) and it really is a fine example. There's no battery damage on the motherboard (previous owner removed it years ago). I've added a X-Surf 100, CV643D, Buddha IDE and 12mb of ZIP fast ram. All it really needed in the future was an accelerator and a bit more ram, but for now it was perfect.

I know the SCSI works as it had an old SCSI HDD in when I got it. I had never tried the external SCSI. 18 months or so ago I connected my SyQuest EZ135 to my Blizzard 1260 + SCSI in my A1200 (before I put a Vampire in it) and pulled all files my old EZ135 disks. Last week I found 3 more disks and thought I'd see what was on them. Using the same DB25 to SCSI cable I'd used on the Blizzard SCSI I connected the EZ135 to the rear of the A3000 (with the power off). 100% I put it in the SCSI port above the parallel port. I checked this 10 times before switching on. I powered up the EZ135 and noticed the A3000's power LED and SCSI activity LED also came on, but didn't think much of it (now wishing I'd stopped at this point).

I then powered up the A3000 and nothing.... Silence, no PSU fan and then BANG! the PSU popped twice and started to smell. You've no idea how my heart sank... I check everything again and cannot see I did anything wrong.

I removed the PSU and could not see any sign of any damage on the motherboard. Today I cut the cable off the original PSU and soldered it to an ATX PSU. Moved TICK jumper to VSYNC. I don't have -5, but I don't think this matters for basic operation? Removed all Zorro cards etc. She won't boot... Power light comes on, video signal on both 23 pin RGB (into 1084) and VGA with Amber on (into LCD) comes alive, but just a black screen. Keyboard buffer seems to be working okay and I can reboot with keyboard and LED goes low-high. If I do this too many times it seems to lock up.

I've removed the SCSI chip, but that made no difference. I did test D800 and it seems to be shorted (diode test works both ways). Not sure sure if this is a result of yesterday or it was already like it. If already like this, could this explain the power LED coming on if 5V was coming from the external SCSI port to the motherboard? If so could this has caused issues with the PSU?

I guess my next step is to burn diag rom and see if I can get any serial output.

If anyone has any suggestions on what else to do (other than cry) or what could have caused this to happen (as I'm now reluctant to use the EZ135 again) and also WHEN (thinking positively) I get the A3000 working again I'm going to be reluctant to plug anything into the SCSI.

Please help...

Rob

Have you tried the caps lock test? A quick google search has revealed the following:

Switch on the A3000 and keep pressing the caps lock key repeatedly - 10 seems to be the recommended count but press it as many times as you deem necessary.

Look to see of the caps lock light turns on and off every time you press the key. If it gets stuck either on or off then you may have blown the CPU for starters.

Why you cut the cable of the original PSU 😱. I think there an many people who are able to repair it. I have 2 PSU which was also fault like yours and both was repairable.

This seems to be okay. This is what I was trying to say by "the keyboard buffer seems to be working okay". I will test again once I have burnt diag roms.
