Hi all, i have a Japanese Master System which i specifically bought for the FM Audio and the fact that it had rapid fire built in.

I also bought the Japanese Phantasy Star cartridge and FM sound seems to work fine.

However i now have a Master Everdrive and a Mark III to SMS converter so thought i'd try loading R-Type to see how that sounds however it doesn't seem to have FM Audio. The audio sounds identical to my Pal model 2 psg so the FM chip doesn't seem to be being initialised and the Rapid fire button also doesn't seem to work.

I tried looking for a specific Japanese rom but all i can seem to find is a world rom.

So does anyone know if i can actually use the FM chip and rapid fire button when using a master everdrive or is it my rom?

I did try a Japanese Phantasy Star rom and didn't get fm audio from that either

Thanks for any advice

This is the adapter i'm using if it helps

hmmm
I only have a SMS1+SMSFM and I get FM sound from R-Type just by loading it with the Master ED... the only thing that needed patching were the 2 Wonderboys that look for a Japanese BIOS, but that does not apply to you... you should just get FM sound, I don't see what the adapter might do to prevent that :\

Have you tried it with the Japanese ROM of Wonder Boy 3? If that hasn't got FM sound then it's definitely the cartridge. Also, you could ask at SMSPower.org, they have a vast knowledge over there and I'm sure it was Bock from the board that made the adapter...

Hi guys, phantasy star is working with fm sound. I picked the English rom instead of Japanese. Wonder boy 3 also works fine.

I'm gonna try a couple different R-type roms see what happens.

I've got my rapid fire working too however when using it with r-type it fires automatically when holding the button but only 1 shot every few seconds. Is there any way to increase the rate?

I've got a Aus (basically Euro) Master System 1 with a Master Everdrive and the FM chip upgrade in the expansion slot. For the two different sound types for R-Type all I need to do is just flick the installed switches on the back of the Master System (I don't recall if both the FM/Normal and the JAP/EUR are both switched though or not). But, the main thing is that it's all from the same R-Type ROM. So in my setup the ROM origin doesn't matter.

So to your question of..."does anyone know if i can actually use the FM chip and rapid fire button when using a master everdrive or is it my rom?",...I would say yes.

Considering that you say FM sound works in other games, I think the approach you mentioned to try a few different R-Type ROMs is sensible.

All sorted, tried a couple of different R-Type roms and finally found one that sounds a lot better :)

Now if anyone knows how to increase the rate of fire when using the rapid fire button that would be nice..
