@Steve / MerlinKV

well my friends, this really comes down to practice, however here is a simple guide that might help.

1. Flux

Not because I love the stuff, this time its VERY important to get the right one, we are dealing with heavy ground planes - much like a PSU, so we need a Flux Paste - most paste's have a higher vaporization point - thus it can do some good when the temperature gets high.

I would avoid liquid fluxes as most of these evaporate at about 280c.

2. Heat

You are going to need a lot of this, no joke here, these anchors of the RF unit are meant to be permanent.

Start off at about 340c - gently oscillate the head of the hot are gun around the area, don't keep it in place for more than a few seconds or you run the risk of blistering the PCB. After about 3 minutes you should increase the temperature to about 380/400c pending. remember the hotter you go - the more you have to keep moving the hot-air gun nozzle.

you should have a solder sucker to at least attempt to remove the solder from anchors, you probably wont get all of it so you need a thin terminal screw driver placed inside the RF phone socket and as the solder in the anchors melt, you very gently push down.

with luck it will pop off and leave just the 3 simple through hole signal pickups (ground, chroma, luma)

Just gently run the hot air over these and suck up the solder and the RF unit should fall out. Allow the PCB to cool for a few minutes, and then clean the area with IPA or diluted IPA.

r0jaws documented the above process in this post from his PPC thread

Its also where I shamelessly ninja'd the picture from too =)

@Zetr0

Great info my friend

In anyway, I need some practice with spares PCB's because my solder/desolder skills are too low

Thanks alot & Best wishes

Pablo

Hey Guys!

I have a little project update for you

Plucked up the courage tonight to do some more soldering, soldered some pins on the HxC Floppy Emulator to make a connector for mounting the screen/buttons outside the case. Since I've made no plans about the screen just yet I decided to mount a single button which acts as Eject. So after I'm done playing an ADF I can hit Eject and then reboot back to the on screen menu.

This simple setup means you don't even need the LCD screen.

So I started by soldering the pins, I don't think its a bad job when you consider that its my first attempt at any through hole soldering :ninja:

I mounted a simple push to make button on the case:

Then the rebuilt the system, and connect the button to my newly soldered pins :D

There it is, all done :)

And a little Video of it up and running:

WOW Steve! Your really getting hot with this modding lark! :D Awesome what you have done to the old A600 in a few days! Keep it up mate, well impressive!

He's a fast learner! Next step... BVision connector! haha :)

Thanks mate, really getting the bug lol for this modding

But I've put the soldering iron away now....

otherwise I'll just start soldeing other stuff :D

Lol, no where near you guys levelz yet - but I'll keep chipping away at it!

Oh and I fed the VGA cable like you said, all works fine - cheers!

Hi Steve

Great job m8.

You A600 is going better everyday :)

I received today the IndyECS, A603, Kickswitch for 1.3 & 3.1 ROM's, SD HxC Emulator, one digital PSU's tester and some other stuff....
I only need to go to my Country to collect all items....... including the A600 you help me to buy :D.

I think I can fly at the end of March and start all my projects the frist week of April ....

My congrats again for your work my friend. Really good.

All the best

@ninjitzsteve :ninja:

I am truly lovin' what I am seeing =).

I will say my friend, that's not the best solder you are using, I assume this is what came with the kit? might I suggest you put that in a draw and pretend it doesn't exist.

My friend, I would recommend the following

Silver Bearing Solder 0.022 for £3.49 Free Postage (eBay.co.uk BIN)

Its the best solder by miles and miles m8 =)

and here is one of the best Flux Paste's too

Laco Solder Paste (113g) for £3.99 + £1.59 postage (eBay.co.uk BIN)

Now those too will bring out the Super A-Game in anybody!

keep up the good work and great threads =)

Hi Zetr0 :)

Cheers mate!

Yeah its the solder that came with the kit, I shall buy some of the solder you suggest

Edit - just bought it lol..

I can see its kind of dull in colour, I guess this is how you can tell its a bit pants lol.

I already have this flux exact paste though, its great stuff. That was seperate to the kit so I guess my father-in-law knows what he's doing

Flux FTW :ninja:

@merlinkv, thanks for the kind words my friend.

Best of luck with your project - looking forward to see what you do with it all :-)

Hi All!

Just a quick update :)

Screws are in and case is closed, I guess that means for now this project is complete

To celebrate here is a little Video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_0o8GCoctE

It starts with a little slide show then I show the OS which is CWB OS3.5, big thanks for mfilos for helping me out with the custom rom I re-kick via the ACA630, boots pretty quick now!

I also show some Doom and Shapeshifter for the fans out there :D

Enjoy!

It looks good. What screen resolution are you using? I am using dblpal. your screen resolution looks bigger. I am having fun with it for 3 days now.

Enjoy your machine:thumbsup:

Thanks mate, its 1024x768 (HighGFX Super High Res Laced) :)

Its a great machine, looks a little slow/lame compared to my A1200's/A4000's but when you think how small it is then compare with standard A600 it rocks :D

Steve.

The ecs is a bith a drawback. I enjoy the kickrom 1.3 and the floppy emulator you have as well to run tons of A500 software. There are a lot of enthousiastic full screen softwares with sounds and bells wich are great on this machine.:)

Lookin' good.

Would try something like this myself except when I weigh up:

Reimplemented ECS
Using ADF Images
Modern LCD Monitor

I can't help but accept the logic that I may as well just be better off with emulation on a PC. Darn rational thinking.

Nifty though all in that small case! Are your hinges intact?
