What's a C64C mainboard? I've seen just as many C64C's with the large boards as I've seen with the small boards. My C64G was sealed when I got it and it had one of the old (large) boards in it. So I don't think there's any rules as to what's inside them.
I can confirm that the cost reduced C64C with the clip I'm keyboard feels flimsier than the screwed together ones when typing. But not as flimsy as all the C64s that exist with half the screws missing!
I would choose a C64C with short board if you're not planning to become a die hard C64 fan. They have a slightly cleaner video output, die of chip failure less (though they are younger) and if they come with a PSU its less likely to be a C64 killer.
Unless you want to go for the full "retro experience" of loading tapes or disks, I suggest to forget about a tape or drive unit.
A C64 and 1541-Ultimate cartridge is all you need to run all available software.
