The requirements are:

  • Colour printing
  • SMALL
  • High WAF
  • Tolerant of low useage(we print a few times each year)
  • Most inkjets dry up and needs replacing of more than ink between my prints
  • Networkable
Other important features:

  • Multifunction ( I need scanning, don´t need fax)
  • Prefereably the scanning function should be available on network, not only on USB
Bonus feature:

  • CD Printing
Do you know a good one?

I will go for a HP model. I have HP printers since 2000 and I'm very satisfied with them.

The price of ink should be a primary decison maker too. Have a look on ebay and see the prices of non-brand name ink cartridges before buying a printer. I can get ink for my Epson printer for a tiny fraction of the price of genuine epson carts, the quality is just as good too.

It's advised to avoid non-branded inks for your printer, as well as the new fashion, that they refill your empty ink-box.

Best printer I´ve seen so far is the Canon Pixma iP100.

Good:
It´s small

Bad:
It´s ink. Will the ink dry up between printing sessions?
It doesnt have scanning

The Samsung SCX-4500 is near perfect.

Good
- It´s laser, its not ink
- It´s multifunction, has scanner
- It´s networkable
- Has high WAF

Bad:
- Its huge
- It´s BW only

If you are worried about damage to the printer due to not using it for a long time and the ink drying up, then buy a HP as the print heads are built into ther ink carts. Other makes such as Epson have the heads separate, so if the ink dries up it is very hard to clean and repair.

Canon are good printers, with the actual printers being good prices, but the ink is very expensive.

I've been using HP multi purpose printer/copier/scanner all in one printers for years and they are really good. Carts last a long time and scanning, copying and printing is fast.

errr what?

I bought non branded ink that damaged my dell printer. They were giving a bit too strong flow. Causing the printhead to bleed long after the cartridges were removed.

This is the kind of quality knowledge I need! Awesome.

The HP Photosmart C4480 doesn´t seem so bad

Good:
Scanning
Colour printing
Not crazy huge

As Harrison stated. HP printers, will not do that, because if you leave such a printer in standby-mode also, every couple of minutes you will hear a sound, which I presume it's avoiding this to happen. ;)

Ok, I realise that my size restrictions cannot be met. So I saw the Epson Stylus Photo PX700W test results and was very impressed.

What about Epson?

Epson seems to be good printers, but I never had one. At least, avoid Lexmark's printers. :D

The previous printer I had was a Dell printer which in turn was a rebranded Lexmark.

Monster it was! Be gone lexmark!

Epson make great printers. For print quality I prefer them over HP. Ink costs are also some of the lowest, whereas HP are quite high. I own an A3 Epson printer and it has been brilliant. As as an example my A3 printers black ink carts are only £14 and that is for branded ones, and they last forever. Colour carts only being £16 too.

However Epson's don't like being left unused for a long time. As their print heads are built in and not part of the cartridge, so if the ink dries out in the head it can be very hard to clear it to make the printer print properly again. For this reason because you said you might not print all of the time I recommend HP over Epson.

Canon are another make that produce some amazing prints, but Canon are probably the most expensive make to run. The actual printers are very affordable, but you will find yourself spending close to £80 each time you need to buy a new B/W and colour cartridge. The carts also don't last long. Maybe 20 A4 colour images before they need replacing.

For print cost Epson can't be beaten as cartridge prices are low and print quality is high.

For the best quality printing Canon are one of the best, but print costs are the highest.

For reasonable running costs, good print quality and better security against print head damage though lack of use HP are the best.

As mentioned avoid Lexmark and other makes. They look good for the price, but their cart prices are always high, their build quality low, and they print quality poor.

Finally, never use third party inks, or refills. Not worth it as the inks are not colour fast so will fade in daylight, the carts don't last as long because the ink isn't the proper constancy, and if the the printer gets damaged because of using them it voids your warranty.

First off Harrison: EXCELLENT POST.

Now, to my question to the quoted paragraph.

The sales tech guy claims that the printer will be a-okay if left in standby mode instead of complete power off (cord cut).

In this mode the printer will, much like a kitten, once in a while whirl to life and lick it self to stay clean.

How much truth is it in this claim.

The guy seemed fairly competent, but not confident. :-)

I'm with H on this. I have an HP Deskjet 1220c A3 printer that I don't use very often. It still worked perfectly well after being left idle and powered off for six months.

I've always found Epson printers fussy and temperamental and at times they make noises as if they are going to fall to bits!!

We use HP Laserjet printers at work and I've always found them to be reliable, even if the colours can be a bit off at times.

Epson's have a terrible reputation for clogging their heads.

I've always personally owned HP Printers and I know the cartridges are more expensive but they do include new print heads everytime you change the Ink..

TC :)

Somehow, I don't think that this thread needs a poll......

;)

Do you know a good one?

Multifunctional laser. I have printed soon 1500 pages and still have yet to run out of the initial batch of half filled toners the printer came with. the WAF-factor can be debated, but she is thrilled with the network use of my samsung, and when her parents have replaced the ink cart three times at the same cost a toner replacement cost - in less time than I have owned mine. I can't say I would suggest anything but a laser unless photo prints are critical. Not that I have tried photo print on photo paper, but I would assume a ink printer does that better. though, a laser doesn't fade like an ink printer over time.

Do you have a colour laser?
