lol, amos 3d at 399 DKK on offer. no wonder i never bought it (just got amos on a cover disk without the manual. which ment i didn't learn enough to truly enjoy it)

HP Micro Server, finally up and running! Installed with FreeNAS today and it works great! I will upgrade the Ram but otherwise it's doing great.

Getting FreeNAS running was easy, just created a bootable USB thumb stick and away it went (I'll create a backup of it in case it dies) Setting up FTP/Windows file sharing was dead easy too.

I've installed some plugins for media steaming to my PS3/XBOX360 & Netbook, all working so I now have access to all my Music & Movies on all my devices

Plus backed up all my photo's, etc.

Was struggling with it at first but getting to grips with it now, the plugins were particularly hard to setup...

I got a 2TB HDD for my Data and using the included 250gb HDD for the plugins. There's two more empty HDD bays for when I run low on space :D

Nice, I've got the n36l but am running whs2011 on it with DrivePool using 4x1TB + 2x 2TB drives (one external 1tb drive and a drive in the ODD).

What do you think of WHS? I was going to go for it but read it's discontinued. I was worried about security updates.

Not that I'm keeping anything private on the machine but loss of data is always a PITA.

Well I thought after the disappointment with the next gen xbox  I'd treat myself and give some support to nintendo wii u and I'm glad to say I like it :)

I like it but am strongly considering switching to FreeNAS for the better apple support (smb is slow) + time machine but the lack of a drive pool option is holding me back ATM, raidZ is just too inflexible for my liking.

I was thinking of Windows Server to setup some old Skool Gaming servers for fun, but I guess I can even do that on another PC, I wonder if the similarities to Linux would makes game servers a possibility (think QIII engine) in the form of plugins. Hmm, could be interesting.

So far I'm really impressed with FreeNAS, I got a little frustrated this afternoon as I couldn't get my PS3 & XBox to see my media, turned out to be because I didn't use the capital M in Media when I setup the mount point

The Firefly plugin is great for iTunes, streaming all my Music on the Netbook via iTunes is pretty cool...

another option would be to run ESXi and then FreeNAS in one VM and WinSrv in another (prolly need a HP p410 raid controller to do it properly) and then you have the best of both worlds. :-)

hehe, unix is case sensitive unlike windows :D

Indeed Skoolboy error but I'm learning fast! Thanks or the tips, I've been doing a lot of research so the extra info helps

I just bought another 2gb Ram to upgrade to 4gb, that'll do for now, can't justify the cost of 8gb at the moment.

Seems to be running ok with 2gb but is using 80%+ Ram so should be good with 4gb :)

No probs. :)

I run 4GB in mine and only have 60% ram utilisation which is about perfect. If you were to run multiple VM's then 8-16GB would be ideal (they do work with 2x Kingston 8GB ECC modules).
