I did. I believe I have one other Sony I will try my luck again.
Difference between OFS/FFS on floppy is normal. Even on DD you get some capacity gain with FFS.
X-Copy can format HD?
About X-copy, I am not sure but it did double time to format it.
Maybe some versions can do.
I have the September 1993 version.

So my other Sony is from Mar 2003, but the PCB is slightly different and the main chip is BH9558KV instead the SONY CXA...
Does it makes any sense of trying to convert it or a waste of time?

Declaring interest.

Not sure but I think the important chip is the BA6986FS.
I would try it!

i have had the version for the teac drive a couple of days but for the life of me cant get a hd disk to format or if formated on my 4000 hd drive to read. in amiga test kit i get a id unstable message. dd disks still read and write perfectly and workbench does identify disks as hd if i insert a hd disk. please help?

Most likely your drive can't work stable as HD. Can you provide some photos of your drive and the exact model? ? This helps other people too.

Even though your model is not the 7291, it is marked 60A, it has R9 and if there is continuity between S5 and pin 4, it should be working.
Now.. Remove the 4 screws that release the wheel, flip it, take a photo of the chip and @AmigaDigital will give you any possible help.

This is not the right chip according to the seller.
IMHO do not waste your time with Teac drives. It's one in a million.
Get a Sony instead.

I'm home at the weekend so will do some testing then. I'll also test the adapters with the original Amtrade drive to to see how it performs.
By the way, I'd like to say that there's no problem with the board.
The problem is if the drive is capable of working as HD and this should have been said at the very first post, instead of saying just fd235...
When you test the board with your amtrade drive, probably it won't work as the drive will need different modification. But I wouldn't touch the amtrade drive.. You never know if you'll have problems after that 😁

my 3rd and final teac drive came and even with the correct chip on the drive spindle board it still dosnt format - if i format in my 4000 i can read it now on my 1200 but i get write errors when trying to write to it.

Can you read a DD disk with your Teac drive, which is known working on another drive? Perhaps a game.
Also, personally i can't understand what you say about 4000 and 1200. Which drive is where? Can you be more specific about what you are doing? Write errors could be a floppy disk problem maybe..

i have an a4000 with a legit hd drive. that is nothing to do with the adapter and teac drives other than its been used to verify my hd disks are known good! i am trying to use the adapter and modified teac drives with my a1200 amd yes dd disks work fine with adapter and teac drives just not hd disks. i am litteraly trying to format and write to hd disks. that is all. every format of a hd disk fails on both teac drives.

Oh ok!! If you can read HD disks but can't write to them, i guess that the drive is not stable. Capable but not stable.
Can you share some photos of the main pcb and the motor pcb?
Also, i am curious to see the coils under the spindle. If you can lift it and take a photo it would be appreciated :)
