Before I go spending even more money, can anyone confirm if the subway USB controller in conjunction with a 604n will work with a vampire as a quick way to add a slim external CDROM drive?

Notice that the product you are linking to is not being sold any longer (hasn't been for many years). RapidRoad is the replacement. I tried to connect an external optical drive to my RR but it would reset when it tried to spin up as there was not enough power available from the USB port so this is something that could be an issue. With the Subway, this can be dangerous since the USB current passes through the Subway and many people have burned their controller this way.

If you can find a drive which does not use power from the USB port, then it should work. I can see that Poseidon did seem to recognize my drive as an optical drive.

It will certainly work if you take care of the extra voltage that will be needed to power an external CD-ROM device, and a CD filesystem on the Amiga.

Just a little early evening Amiga PRON for people :-)

This is one of kippers, he does come through eventually but I can imagine he is inundated with emails and "spam messages" from people. I ordered this on January 18th so best part of 6 months, and I received 2 emails in that time. But alias its here

My vampire arrived this morning many thanks @majsta I quickly installed and tested it this morning. All looks good, 128mb fastram and wb 3.1 flies along ;)

I now have just over a month to get the machine ready for the Amiga Ireland event below where it will be available for demo, or just for a game of duke nukem 3d ;)

Will let you know how the install of os3.9 etc goes.

Edit:

OK please forgive me, I am a relative Amiga newbie! I am having difficulty finding details on getting classicwb 3.9 installed and working on the vampire equipped 600. My DOM boots fine on both the a600 and under winuae with 3.9 bb2 (no ROM update) but once I then apply Classic WB 3.9 it refuses to boot on the a600, the DOM still boots fine on winuae.

I have turned off as much of the additions as possible, and on the last attempt use only 16 colours. But it still won't boot on the a600 - just a black screen. Any ideas?

I haven't used those WB packs before--does it run SetPatch in your startup-sequence and reboot the system with the ROM update? If so, it sounds like the updated scsi.device isn't playing well with your DOM.

I didn't follow the thread for months, uploaded the kickstart just now.

got it to work somehow from the amiga forever CD.. took me a while but i got there

I saw on kipper2k's last update on his site mentioned people uploading Kickstart images. I know that the pre-orders here had to upload their Kickstart ROM. Should people buying from kipper2k's site upload theirs also following the instructions here or some other procedure?

I know that he's busy building boards and not emailing people until he's nearly ready to ship. If the image is required for purchases from his site and I can do it to stay ahead of the process to not slow him down, I'd like to.

I'm late to the Vampire hype, just got an A600 and installed a CF HDD.
I emailed Kipper2k a couple of weeks ago hoping to order a Vampire600, but not hear from him yet. I'm sure he's super busy especially if he's designing A500 version :D

Just hoping I'm not too late to get one. There no chance it's getting discontinued yet is there?

I guess you have just to wait, I am waiting for a long time also and havent heard back also. When Kipper doesnt respond its generally a good thing which means you are on the list...

Just received mine from majsta today! Many thanks. Yet to test it but looks like the success rate is almost 100% :)

Klipper is building the majority of the v600 boards, but Majsta is main designer of the A500 board currently in development (and the other versions too).
You need to understand that the number of orders for the v600 by far exceeded expectations so kipper2k has a pretty substantial back-log he's trying to take care of.
There is no assembly line, if you order now you must be prepared to wait months before it's your turn.

For the A500 and A1200 versions I expect the boards to be much more assembled from the supplier or we will be looking at reeeeeeally long waiting times for them. And frankly, Majsta and Kipper shouldn't have to spend all their free time at soldering boards.

But in any case, those of you who are late to the party and didn't yet order the v600 version, you should know the 500 version will soon be finished and further down the road, we will see a 1200 version.
With an adapter , the A500 version should also work in A2000 making those old doorstops useful again ;-)

I'm really looking forward to put a Vampire 500 in my CDTV: I hope it will fit without need of adapters :)

What happened with the remaining pre-orders? I guess Majsta is delivering them at his own pace. I have no hurry, but I wanted a status update.
