Hello folk:

Lately, when attempting to close a project in any program on my A2000, a window will pop up stating "Volume Workbench is full", offering the option to either Retry or Cancel. Choosing Cancel closes the window and the program closes okay.

Using the shell info command, I get the following information about the Workbench Directory:

UNIT SIZE USED FREE FULL NAME
DH0 104M 107518 0 100% Workbench

It is my limited understanding that the system will store temp files in WB, and that could be the issue, but I see no evidence of this.

Not being much of a techie, I have looked inside the WB window, and found the directories for the Utilities, System, Prefs, etc. and not seen anything that looked unusual.

Otherwise the machine works fine.

Anyone care to offer an opinion as to what is going on and how to pinpoint it?

It is version 40.42

Nothing should be routinely stored on the system drive just by using it, as T: is assigned to RAM. But of course there are countless 3rd party programs that might.

You could make a full listing of the contents of the drive (is it "dir all"? Can't check the syntax right now) to a file and then examine it yourself to see what is taking the most space, or post it as an attachment here.

Thanks for the feedback. There are no programs stored in this area, so not quite sure what you mean by that.

Well WB3.1 only takes a couple of megabytes, so if you have filled up 104MB, there has to be something extra installed :)

But do this in a shell:

Code:
> cd sys:
> list all > ram:contents.txt

A file called contents.txt will be created on the Ram Disk that has a listing of everything that is on your system partition. Go through that and see if there's anything suspiciously large sized in there. Or post for us to have a look.

My last line in that file for a clean WB3.1 install says:

TOTAL: 366 files - 68 directories

Okay, thanks, will look into it shortly.

Attempted to follow your instructions, but----

Opened a Shell window, and saw the following:

New Shell process 8
8.Workbench:>

Typed in cd sys:
hit return
Produces the same line 8.Workbench

Typed in list all > ram:contents.txt
Produces the same line 8.Workbench

???

Taking things a step further:

Opened a Ram Disk window, show all files:

I see the following:

Three Directories;

Clipboards, which is empty,

ENV, which contains many icons, consisting of 14 Directories, eg, envoy, miami, datatypes, mui, Sys,Vapor, etc, and several icons which are in the shape of a book lying horizontally, eg HTTX.prefs, TS_HDPATH, etc and one icon shaped like a hammer named deficns.prefs.

T, which contains a directory called samba-locks, and another book icon called turboprint.log

There is a fourth icon shaped like a book, but it is green, compared to the others which are brown, and has a pair of eyeglasses located above it. It is called contents.txt

Oh, I missed you already had "Show all files"...

Just ignore the bit between the lines.. ;-)
(Yes, I should just delete it, but I'm too lazy..)

(ignore)
--------
Files without .info files (like the ram:contents.txt you created) won't have icons.
You have to view all the contents of the folder in WB or look at the files using the shell.

After you've done the above, type
cd RAM:
list

And you should see the contents.txt file.
-------------

Try the

list all

...by itself and see what happens...
(A lot of stuff should scroll by..)

More info for you:

Neglected to mention that there is a directory on the Desktop called Workbench that was placed there some years ago by a tech I knew who repaired the system after a HD failure. That is the directory that has the 104M content.

Opened another shell, typed in the info command and received the following list:

Hi Desiv:

Thanks for the correction. Sent the last post before I saw yours. Did as you suggested and the following appears:

Ram Disk:> list
Disk.info 1137--------rw----d today
contents.txt 267532------rw----d today
ENV Dir----------rw ----d today
Clipboards Dir----------rw----d today
T Dir----------rw----d today
2 files --- 3 directories - 272 blocks used

That might actually be your Workbench (Boot partition).

According to your "info" and the "cd sys:" that is the name of your Boot Partition.

AH.. That file is there...
Open that file..

From a command line (you're still in RAM: ), type:

ed contents.txt

(There are better ways to view a text file, but I'm most familiar with "ed" ;-) )

In the event that this helps, here is a list of the files on the DH0 "workbench" partition:

List of contents for workbench:

Prefs Utilities Tools System WBStartup Devs Storage Expansion AsimCDFS .AmFTPProfiles TurboPrint AmiTCP-4.3 MUI Yam .backdrop C Classes L Libs Locale Repair_kit
prospool-handler Rexx S T Temp wf_ethernet

Is this getting us anywhere?

Missed you again.

Did as you suggested and have a data list.

Are we wanting to see this list here?

What we need to see/compare are file/directory sizes too.

(Should be in that txt file..)

Unfortunately I'm not at my Amiga, so from memory I won't be much more help..
(Won't be at my Amiga for about 4 hours)

You've been a big help already, thanks.

I'm just North of you, so at least we are in the same time zone.

On your own time.

Thanks again.

do you think you have an invalidated drive? because its saying its 100% full.(it will still boot)

have you tried copying it to another partition(including the hidden directorys),then formating the boot partition and copying it back?

No idea. Can not afford too much experimentation at this time, as I am in the middle of a project with the machine, and do not want to disturb it any more than I have to.

Thanks for the suggestion.:)

ive actually done it this way,its safe as long as you dont reboot while your transfering and formating the drive:)

I don't doubt your word, just my own ability.

My backup machine is in for repairs, so I don't want to tempt the computer gods.

Am willing to try it out, but at a later date, thanks.

Do you have other partitions on this HD? If so, check where the YAM program is stored and fire it up.

From the options, select a different partition to store YAM messages (YAM is Yet Another Mailer, simply the best e-mail program ever created to any platform to this day).

Check the e-mails sotored in the sys: partition and delete the files if you want.

Also remember the old versions of YAM have a bug that make the partition where it store temporary files get a devalidation. One reason you might getting the current issue.

Okay, thanks, will check this out.

Have not used Yam for several years, so don't know why that would suddenly start acting up.

The entire machine has been dormant for quite some time, with the odd startup to print an image created in DPaint, converted using the Trace utility included in PDraw, then imported into PPage and printed.

The issue has just started lately.

Thanks again for the input.

@nineoc

If I understand correctly, you got the contents.txt listing made, but did not yet examine what it says? Ok just to continue with that:

Code:
> cd sys:
> list all > ram:contents.txt

(this takes a moment, wait until completed)

> multiview ram:contents.txt
Now you should see a listing of everything on your system drive. You can look through it yourself to see what is taking the most space, or post it here on the forum for us to have a look at.

Okay, thanks. Will go through that tomorrow when I am back at the Amiga, and post the results.

Much appreciated. :)

Okay, back now, and:

Typing cd sys:
Takes me to the Workbench Dir

Typing list all> ram:contents.txt
Gives me No information for "all>"; object not found

Typing "list"
Gives me a list that does not contain the contents.txt file

Typing cd RAM:"list"
Gives me a list that does not contain the contents.txt file

It appears to have gone somewhere else.

???:(
