Weird thought crossed my mind about geography. Since everyone here has to declare what country they are in, I wonder if there is a "Top 20" or "Top 25" Retro Computing Countries AmiBaY list available here somewhere, based on these registration. Not scientific and I know there will be a lot of non-active and the data is not perfect, but it will be generally close and it would be very interesting to see where all the countries rank, if they follow population size or if some smaller countries punch above their retro-ratio weights, etc. Who's #1? I can't be the only one curious. :-)

Is there a page here somewhere that lists countries and number of people registered from each?

Unethical solution:

1. get the ID of the latest member by looking at the link at the bottom of the page under "AmiBay Forum Statistics"
2. send multiple requests to https://www.amibay.com/members/xxx.NUMERICID/ (maybe 1 per second not to overload the server) Even if you don't know the matching username you get a helpful redirect to the correct URL
3. look at the country flag and keep a list of all countries with the respective count
4. make a nice infographic with the data
5. profit

(I'm not suggesting someone should do this, it was just fun to figure out if it was possible, an official list would obviously be better. Not sure if the ability to iterate over all members this way is intended or if it's an oversight in XenForo)

@miggymad - hopefully they come across it and pitch in. Considering we're all about retro, and retro games nearly always had a HIGH SCORE table, isn't it time we had one?

Imagine, we become competitive and start asking/recruiting other people to join AmiBaY to get our country higher on the (semi-annually or annually) refreshed HIGH SCORE sheet? It could really get out of control. :)

@pc13589 - I don't think a country HIGH SCORE table is unethical. At this point, we can probably predict the top countries. I'm thinking: USA, UK, Germany, Poland, Italy, Canada, Australia/NZ (yeah, I'm bunching you too!) and then there will probably be a big drop-off in score, if we get a count. Not sure if AmiBaY publishes total members.

I just meant that running a script to scrape data from all possible member pages (currently 34413 but since the official member count is 23833 I guess some accounts were deleted or some IDs are not sequential) without permission might not be a good idea, even though it's public data so I don't think most people would mind :)

@davideo - I'd say, don't waste time scrubbing the data. If a guy came into town for the summer and set a HIGH SCORE on a local machine and left, would that not count? :-)

The top 3 should be as it has always been with the Amiga
- UK
- Germany
- France

But are you willing to take into account, numbers of members, numbers of posts, number of feedbacks (i am awfuly late on my due feedbacks and hopefully i will catchup during the holidays), number of computers, or what?

@Xanxi - I'm thinking, keep it simple. Number of members score sort only, use the rest for tie-break scenarios. :)

OK, the year is over, can we please have the ranking of countries at end of 2024? Now that USA is not #1, I'm curious where they rank. Also, where does Canada - the birthplace of Commodore rank?

We should know where each "team" is in the standings, so that in 2025 we can fight to rank higher by year end and not face relegation into Retro-irrelevance.

You already had Amiga sponsor Chelsea, so we'd appreciate not being poked miggymad. Most every other country barely got a dealer network. But, if other countries put in a Jehova-Witness-Like effort to find and recruit Retro fans to join, it is UK who will be dethroned from the top step. Oh boy...the battle for Retro AmiBaY cup begins! :-)

Are you guys seeing all the USA members joining lately? I think USA is moving up the standings, but how high?

If they move into the top 3 standings, will AmiBaY apply a tariff? :-)

All these boys from USA saying hello lately, you don't see it? It's like there is some type of effort to Make Amiga Great in America!
