First Contact had great action, but suffered from the same thing that all the subsequent films suffered from - Picard being the complete antithesis to what he was in the show. Picard is not an action hero, he is a contemplative and quiet man, a philosopher who would prefer to talk things through. It's what made his character work, that he was so different to Kirk (who shot everything he saw) yet got the job done. He made you think. Not so in the films.

Actually, there are some episodes in which Picard shows itself quite an impressive commando. For instance, the one where some terrorists take over the ship during a tachyon cleaning while the Enterprise is empty.

Ah yes, if I recall he got into that mess because he left his saddle behind... wasnt that in series 1?

Don't you have a depreciated picture of Picard physical abilities because you have seen him as Professor Xavier in a rolling chair? Don't forget he was also the mighty Gurney Halleck, expert in knife fight, in a previous life. :D

Ah I tend to hop between seasons these days, Must have gotten it mixed up with another ep.

Not to mention Uriel Septim in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion! :D

Picard has always been able to take care of himself, but like I said, he is much more aggressive and violent in the films than in the tv series. RedLetterMedia's First Contact review talks about this, specifically in part 2. Watch it here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-f3bscZa0E

Skip to 1:48, where he begins his analysis of the differences between tv show Picard and movie Picard. I still enjoy the TNG films for what they are, but he's absolutely right.

Arent the films set much later than the series? Maybe hes outgrown his reserve?

"Is there a John Luck Pickered here?" :D

Aha! A "Q" quote :) He was my favourite character from TNG

"treasures to satiate, desires both subtle and gross, but it's not for the timid"

And another

"Picard: Q? What is going on here? Where is the anomaly?
Q: [pretending to be deaf] Where is your mommy? Well, I don't know."

And I'll say it again, Played brilliantly by Mr DeLancie :D

He was great in Voyager as well, Janeway had the same view of him Picard did, rofl.

Apparently not. Wikipedia says Generations is set a year after Next Generation ended, First Contact two years after that, Insurrection another two years on, and Nemesis four years after that.

Next Generation - 2364 - 2370

Generations - 2371

First Contact - 2373

Insurrection - 2375

Nemesis - 2379

So... no!

Must have been a tough year then :p

I went with the missus to see Star Trek II when it first came out and I came out of the cinema almost in tears...

Me: "He's dead.....":o
Her: "It's just a film...."
Me: "You don't get it... Spock... he's dead....." :wooha: :(
Her: "It's just a bloody film!!"

She likes weepies, Angela's Ashes-type films and chick flicks. :picard

I like Star Trek, Space: Above and beyond and stuff like that. :D

We agree to differ in our choice of films.

 Oh well if you were identical it'd be no fun. ;)

I dipped in and out of the Original series, but was hooked when TNG first showed.
It was brilliant, however my favourite has always been DS9. That series and particularly Capt Sisko showed a different edge to the Federation, a little more confrontational, less willing to try and find "another way". :p
I also loved the fact that it was a frontier station dealing with two aggressive races, Cardassians and the Dominion and rather than always seeking to compromise, they armed the place up with 5000 torpedoes!
I also liked the development of the Ferengii, Bajorans and Cardassians. It was an interesting counterpoint to the sometimes sterile federation stories, especially the ones featuring Quark and Rom.
The Dominion were also an interesting concept, almost like a Federation gone bad. Great to see how that worked.
The only downside as I saw it was the lack of Borg, I loved the Borg. Part of Sisko'sd charm to me was his burning hatred of the Borg, and consequently Picard, who he blames for his wife's death at their hands. The first Episode, Emissary, where he confronts Picard was a classic! From then on I was hooked.

With the Borg in mind, has anyone else spotted this interesting little crossover? Assimilation2
A crossover story of TNG, Dr Who, Cybermen and Borg. It only came out in May, I feel compelled to have a look for a copy! :D

I've never been a fan of the ferenghi... vile creatures, always price driving...

I watch it if it's one, but never sought it out. More of a Star Wars fan, although George Lucas' infernal tinkering has utterly destroyed my childhood now. (The bollix only lives around a mile from me!) I do agree with the person who said that the JJ Abrams one from a couple of years ago was very good, although can see how it would have ruffled the feathers of the purists.

Babylon 5, tho... now we're talkin'. And made on Amigas, too.

Don't want to derail the Star Trek loving, but I loved B5 too. Infact I finished re-watching the entire DVD collection not that long ago. Brilliant stuff, hardly dated at all.

Loved the story arc in B5 but never could get around to seeing season 5. If there ever was a "just one more episode" series, that was it :)

Mr. Garibaldi!

What is it Londo :picard:
