I don't know if you're the sort of person for whom the mention of MS-DOS brings back warm nostalgia of kickass VGA shareware and hours spent fiddling around in QBASIC (i.e. me) or sour memories of trying to get some work done on a single-tasking system where the slightest change in hardware configuration can break any program in subtle or extravagant ways, but I enjoy playing around with old-school 8086/286/386 PCs, and you might, too :)
 
If you want a CP/M style system don't bother with IBM PC crap, build one of these:

you can get 8 bit computer kits off some sites, can't remember which though.


Oh yes, acorn archimedes / RISC PC. You can even buy new ones, I think. But not by acorn.

Aah, the good old days of MS-DOS and DOS4GW..:D I still have an original set of MS-DOS 6.0 disks. Well, there's always Dosbox.
