Waste of money mate. Seriously look at the Nexus 7. The new 32GB version for £199 is a no brainer. Or if you want a 10 inch version its about to be launched.

Well the Nexus 7 is very nice, but the extra premium for the iPad Mini is well worth it for the richer app selection and better build.

agreed , its too expensive to kill the cheaper tablets. Shame really.

although the Apple is the best built tablet ive ever used ...by a long way.

When I used to predict the introduction of an oversized iPhone as the "iPad Mini," I kind of half thought I was joking, but knew somewhere in the back of my mind that that was exactly what they were going to do. Now I just wonder how long until my prediction about the introduction of an iPad with revolutionary new attached, hinged keyboard! comes to pass...

They might of pulled the iPad 3 to rework them for distribution as a iPad 4. They can reuse alot of the parts for the 4. Smart move.

What's this obsession with "killing off" cheap Android tablets? Is competition a bad thing? I bought a Chinese tablet back in July, 9.7" 1.5Ghz A10, 1GB DDR3, Mali 400, same screen as the iPad 2. €150 including shipping direct from China, it now has CM10 installed with Jellybean and is smooth as butter. Runs everything on the market and 3D-intensive games play well at the highest settings. Solidly built, too. If I'd known about the dual core version with the same screen as the iPad 3 I would have gone for that. I fail to see the downside, here!

I have no interest in the iPad myself anyway, mini or not. Closed proprietary iOS vs open, rooted Android? I'll take the latter, please.

No obsession, some of them must be good and work well. Just not the ones I've seen sadly.

I'm not keen on apps that play upside down or have no sound or video ..

Mike.

Only reason I'd get a tablet personally is to use as a PDF reader so I can study conveniently on the go... Otherwise they're really just netbooks without a keyboard...

Have you tried a nexus 7 for real? Really nice build quality that is far removed from most Android tablets. It makes my wife's Samsung galaxy tab 2 feel very plastic and cheap.

I do agree Apple has a bit of an advantage regarding apps, purely because Apple had a huge head start over Google. However I've not had a single issue with any apps I'm using on my Nexus 7, and there are loads of games and apps already optimised specifically for this one tablet and others running the same chipset. And I've always managed to find an apps for everything so far.

Google play has transformed a huge amount over the past year, and finally we have Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It's far removed from earlier versions, and even from 4.0 it's so much nicer. The nexus products also have the advantage of direct first in line Google support, seeing upgrades to new OS releases before any other device. And 4.2 it's on the way.

The 32GB Nexus 7 will walk all over the iPad Mini this Christmas.

I thought the same till I finally bought one. Now I don't need to sit at the computer to check emails, to look something up online, read a digital magazine etc. Tablets are consumer content viewing devices, and are definitely not productivity minded.

Yep tablets are great, my wife hardly ever turns on the PC anymore to check FaceBook

Nexus 7 looks like a great tablet for the money, I'll try and get one as my Xmas present this year :)

Apple do make nice products, but they charge over-the-top and I hate the lock-in.

If they'd got it under £200 they'd have a fair stab at the Nexus 7, It will initially sell well due to the Apple fans out there, but All I see is two generations old hardware plopped into a smaller case and pushed out at a premium.

Nexus 7

Quad core Tegra, 1.3GHz,
1GB RAM,
1280x800 res (can go higher on next version. Android = no fixed res)
16GB (£179),
32GB (£199).
Android Jellybean 4.1 (4.2 soon) WITH AWESOME MAPS!

WIN

--------------------------------------

iPad Mini

Dual Core A5, 800MHz (2011 tech)
512MB RAM
1024 x 768 res (apple apps have locked res, so locked to iPad 2 spec)
16GB (£269) + 4G (£369)
32GB (£349, £150 more than Nexus 7) + 4G (£449)
64GB (£429) + 4G (£529) (Ouch)
iOS 6 (probably wont run iOS 7 when it comes out in a year) WITH POO POO MAPS! :D

I think my next tablet will be an Android one. Not that I'm thinking about replacing my apparently obsolete ( :picard ) iPad "3" yet, but Apples release schemes are really getting ludicrous.

Never use my laptop anymore. The pad is just so convenient for mail and browsing :)

Well, it isn't a surprise given the "lightning" connector. Now all current i-unit uses that connector (and second gen ones uses the old one). So the refresh was probably accelerated because of that. not that apple has that bad track record with updates. galaxy tab is in so many versions and sizes you need a calculator and probably numerous google searches to track down every one.

My next tablet is a e-ink reader (kindle paperwhite).

I've been looking at those, they look nice. Can they read PDF format at all?

Yes, I have a Kindle Touch and it handles PDF very nicely, I do my studies on it as well :)

I really don't see the point in the iPad mini.

I have an iPad2 and I'm happy with it (I wouldn't want this smaller as I browse the web, play games and watch movies on it). I also have a Droid phone (HTC Sensation) - again which I'm happy with and use for apps that are fine on the smaller screen (Sat Nav etc).

Who are they aiming this new mini at? If you're into Apple - you're likely to have already an iPhone or an iPad (normal size). For me the mini isn't mini enough - but there in-lies the problem. Make it smaller and you may as well have an iPhone or similar. Larger and it won't be large enough and again - you might as well have an iPad 2/3/4 at that point.

Pointless if you ask me (and I do - and always have liked Apple)

It's really expensive for a small tablet with only 512MB of ram. My last tablet had that amount and with no apps running it typically had only half that available. Run an app or two and you're down to sub-100... not good.

The "point" of the mini is to compete in the "low end" market, but Apple along the way is missing the whole point. The "low end" market is made for people who can't afford or refuse to pay for the high end (why else would a company like e-machines or acer have thrived). Apple believes that people will pay any price for their "stuff" and therefore is missing the point of the "Low End" market.
Sure, their will always be the loyalists that will pay anything, but if Apple wanted to dominate the whole tablet market, they would sell them at $100-$150 price, and make up for the loss with the App Store.
But, I believe that Apple truly dosent care anyway, if they own the market or not at this point. They are the richest company on the face of the earth right now, and they know they will sell a few millon in the Christmas quarter, the numbers will be spun so they can brag that they made the right choice in the price to their investors, and in the end, a high quality, low price unit like the Nexus 7 will dominate the market, especially in this economic climate.

I hope we are not getting ripped off in the uk , paying far too much for everything as usual.

But yes I agree , the iPad mini is a tad too expensive. as a small device it should be cheaper.
