Withheld payments
On this page
We know how important it is for you to receive your money as quickly as possible. However, your payouts may be withheld due to your previous sales history or service status, or in connection with disputes. This ensures that eBay remains a safe marketplace for buyers and sellers.
In most cases, payment holds are released when a buyer confirms that they have received their item or when a case is resolved. We use tracking information to verify that a buyer has received their item. If you want to receive your money faster, we recommend that you
ship your item within your handling time and
upload shipping information. If you use eBay shipping labels, tracking information is automatically uploaded. You can use your held funds to
purchase shipping labels on eBay.

Check payment holds - opens in a new window or tab
To continue to make eBay a safe place to buy and sell and to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, we occasionally hold funds as described in the
Payment Processing Terms - opens in a new window or tab. Payment holds may occur, for example, if there is an open case or dispute regarding a transaction, if your buyer reports a problem with the order, if your eBay account is restricted or suspended, if you owe eBay money, or if you are a new seller or sell infrequently. If your payments have been withheld for any reason, we will notify you and, depending on the reason for the payment hold, may request additional information from you so that we can resolve the issue.
There are three types of payment holds:
transaction-level payment holds,
payment holds for payment disputes, and
payment holds for withdrawals.
Transaction-level payment hold
With a transaction-level payment hold, we hold payments related to a specific buyer transaction. The held payouts can be used to issue a refund to the buyer in connection with the same transaction.
To reduce the likelihood of payment holds on transactions, we recommend that you ship an item on the same day that the buyer pays for it. It is also advisable to follow best practices, such as providing tracking information for your order.
Tip
Payment holds are usually released within 30 days. In rare cases, however, it may take longer. For most orders, you can receive your money faster if you provide tracking information.
In certain cases, we reserve the right to hold your payments at the transaction level, regardless of whether the transaction is covered by our eBay Buyer Protection. Criteria for these holds may include your service status, changes to your account status, and other factors we use to ensure the security of the marketplace across all categories. The following rules apply:
- New or occasional commercial sellers and new or occasional private sellers who registered before September 9, 2025, will typically receive their funds within 30 days while they familiarize themselves with proven sales methods.
- New or occasional private sellers who registered after September 9, 2025, can find more information about when their money will be available for payouts on our Payouts for sold items page.
- For previously restricted or suspended sellers, transaction-level payments will be held for the first 30 days after the restriction or suspension is lifted until confirmation is received that the items have actually been delivered.
- High-priced items may result in transaction-level payment holds of up to 30 days. This is to ensure that buyers have no issues with their orders.
- Unusual sales patterns may result in payments being released 3 days after delivery confirmation or 30 days after the order was placed.
- Authenticity verification may result in transaction-level payment holds of up to 30 days while the authenticity of items sold with eBay Authentication is still being confirmed.
Payment holds for payment disputes or due to the eBay Buyer Protection Program
If a buyer requests a return or reports a problem with the purchase, we may hold your funds.
For example, if a buyer reports that an item has not arrived or that the item received differs significantly from the listing description, or if a buyer opens an eBay Buyer Protection case for another reason covered by the
eBay Buyer Protection Policy, we will hold the relevant amount until the case has been resolved and closed. We will also hold your payment if a buyer initiates a chargeback, direct debit return, or PayPal buyer protection case—or otherwise asks their bank to review a payment related to an eBay purchase. The payments held may be used to refund the buyer in the same transaction.

Tips for avoiding and resolving buyer issues.
Payment holds for payouts
Payout holds are amounts payable to a specific seller that are held because the seller may need to take action on their eBay account.
- Payment holds for login information issues: We may hold payouts if we find discrepancies in the information you provided when you registered. If your eBay account is restricted, we will notify you and ask for more information. For more information on how to verify your identity, see our help page Register as a seller.
- Payment holds for compliance reasons: eBay implements policies and procedures to protect buyers and sellers and to comply with legal requirements. If your eBay account has been placed on hold or restricted for compliance reasons, we will notify you and request additional information from you if necessary.
- Payment holds due to service status issues: We will hold your payments if we detect unusual activity on your eBay account, such as an increase in buyer protection claims, a sudden change in your sales activity, late deliveries, or negative feedback from buyers.
- Invalid payment method: If we are unable to collect your selling fees and other costs using your stored payment method, we are entitled to withhold your payments. In this case, you must add another payment method.
