Giving up.

So, I've decided I've had enough with the amiga. Why?

Because every single machine I've owned has been a peice of @#$!

Efika:

Ram was too low. Opening a single web page from a fresh boot would fill it entirely and crash it. Battery ran out, changing the (randomly generated !) MAC address and rendering the morphos keyfile useless. Plus the PicoPSU was buggered so badly you had no idea when you could actually turn it on and use it, and when it would just sit there as an affront to everything you've been led to beleve.

Efika is NOT an Amiga and never was. Although I still believe that Efika wouldn't exist. :)

I don't understand the second part of your sentence, but the efika, err.. well I wouldn't recommend one in these days of (extremely cheap second hand) emacs, mac minis G4 power macs being able to run MorphOS.

I get the impression that it's just the 128mb of ram that's the problem, the processing power is okey, MorphOS 2.5 did help with not mirroring the graphics memory, but it's still a constant having to check the amount of memory left...

Oh, and the small form factor is a nice idea, but the not standard shape means you have to shove it into a box that's twice the size of a mac-mini or something...

anyway...

Did you try to reseat the roms on the motherboard? When I first got my miggy I had problems with stuff not working, reseated roms and never had a problem since.

And now it's completely bricked. Black screen, power light on, no other signs of life.

Ta mate.

Whatever, I'm going to swap motherboard with the other one. This will probably set the house on fire or something.

Could equally be something very simple. Have you tried to reseat the kickstart roms? I had an A1200 that wouldn't boot at all, just a black screen with the power light on. Removed the kickstart roms and reseated them and it booted first time.

Sometimes hardware can go wrong with a very simple reason and fix, but can cause great frustration and headaches until the simple reason can be found. As others have said, we have all been there... but we also all learn from these little adventures... it's how everyone else on Amibay is so able to help others.. because they have all also been there and experienced the same problems.

Twice. And at this point I'm pretty sure reseating them has killed the motherboard/rom chips. I'm going to assemble a1200 from the "not working" pile and whoever wants to try and fix it can have a go. I'm sick of this.

Caring for an Amiga is like looking after an old, frail person who needs love and attention to keep them alive.

Ultimately rewarding, but a royal pain in the ass most of the time.

@ Hell_Labs

If it's causing you so much grief, PM me about packing it up and sending it to me, so that I can take a look at it. I've got spare ROMs and PSU's here so I'm not short of spares to change items out, to try and work out what the problem is. I can also test the MTec in another A1200 here.

I can't say fairer than that.

That could be the PSU finally giving up; one of the voltage rails might still be running, but take any one of them out and this is what you get, more often than not.

Sounds good.

PSU deffo works, Just tried the 1200 assembled from whatever works, and it boots fine.

Err excuse me, reseating roms will not break anything. But w/e and no problem.

This things like bloody china then. Picking up a 1200, moving it about 3 foot, putting it down again, suddenly broken??? Sounds more like :censored: build quality error to me.

Do you honestly expect these to work forever they are the best part of 20 years old!

The fact its lasted this long assumes 'good' build quailty to me, I've had new PC's die a lot quicker!

@ H_L

Commodore were never really that hot on build quality unfortunately. The saving grace is that they are simple designs for the most part and can be easily fixed in a lot of cases.

Keep the faith and try and hold back on the language, please.....

Yeah I do actually, there's no dodgy caps on the board, and there are minimal moving parts to wear out.

Only just discovered this post. Sad to hear that the miggy and accelerator that you got from me is dead :(

You've checked the accelerator in another 1200? If this is the case and you are getting red screens, might I suggest you try something for me?

The battery connector on the Mtec is not very good, just two prongs. Check the prongs and try to elevate them away from the board. Since selling the card to you I have had another MTec that I received 'dead' lifting these prongs away from the board slightly turned it into a working card.

There is a wealth of experience on this board and many people eager to help others. Keep the faith. If there is any more I can do hit me up on PM

When reseating the roms, did you ensure they were seated exactly on the pins they were on before. The rom sockets have an extra set of pins and roms should only be seated at one end.

So trying the 1230 on the working motherboard (batterly done as you said)

RED SCREEN:

Manufacturer 2192 product 32 status: defective.

Clicking continue gurued it and reset to the kickstart screen, before I could copy it down.

Now i'm at the workbench with 0 other mem... show config still gives 68030/68882fpu/68030mmu...

?

I had a problem a few years ago with a 1200 trapdoor card. What I found was that the top metal sheilding was grounding out the card by touching the connector.

I had to bend the upper casing up slightly near the trapdoor connector to clear the fault.

Might be worth a closer look.
